Fine Arts

Since the faculty are working in the studios during many non-class hours, they are available to assist students at those times. There is no formal “tutoring” available beyond these informal one on one situations. Also, since studio courses meet for twice the contact hours of typical lecture courses, students have much more help during class time. For art history (ART110: Survey of Art History I and ART 111: Survey of Art History II) students should contact Professor Neuman de Vegvar (x3603, cndevegv@owu.edu) to arrange contact with potential student tutors.

Geology-Geography

Extra services are not formally available. However professors will occasionally ask a major to work with an introductory student. For the most part, the department wants students to come to the faculty for assistance.

Humanities-Classics

Tutoring is available for Latin 111 from Marie Jaquish. She is currently providing tutoring on a one-one or group basis on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Smith Date Study.

Modern Foreign Languages

Tutoring is available for Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Italian, and Russian on an individual basis at University Hall in room 212. The hours vary Monday through Friday from 9 to 5. Ohio Wesleyan University students who are native speakers or excellent speakers provide the tutoring. For further information, contact Rita Boham at x3667.

Mathematics

The Missouri Club provides tutoring on a group basis for MATH 111 Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the Welch ground floor Study Room. Andrew Riley will tutor from 7-9 on Tuesday and Tony Wong from 7:30-9 on Thursday. Tutoring is also available from the Q-Center in the Sagan ARC. The mathematics courses tutored by the Q-Center are: Math 100.2, Math 105, Math 108, Math 110, Math 111, and Math 230.

Physical Education

Faculty work on an individual basis in assisting students who need tutoring. Sometimes the faculty member provides the help and other times it is students who tutor students. It is very individual and on a case by case basis.

Physics and Astronomy

Extra tutoring services are available for Physics 111 or Physics 116 which are the calculus-based and algebra-based general physics sequences, respectively. Yaser Helal will be available to assist students in these areas in the Welch Hall classroom. Each week the course professors will indicate when tutoring sessions will take place. Tutoring will be either one-on-one or as a group depending on who shows up for help.

Psychology

Psi Chi, a student honors society, provides student tutors who work with students on either a one-one or group basis at the Beeghly library or at one of the resident halls at times arranged by the students and the tutors. The names and contact numbers of these volunteer tutors are posted in the Psychology Office. Courses in which students may need extra help include Psyc 110, 210, 310, and 343. While the entire faculty welcome individual sessions with students, many also hold review sessions before exams.

Theatre and Dance

The faculty fills the need for tutoring. No extra students are used.

Zoology

Tutoring is done on a personal and individual basis in Zoology department courses. Most of the demand is in introductory level classes, including Zoology 101, 102, 115, and 120. The first line of help is the faculty, and all students who struggle are encouraged to seek help and advice from their professors. Individual and groups help sessions are common. Several professors also assemble lists of volunteer tutors, students who have found success in zoology courses and who are willing to spend some time with those having difficulty. “Details of these sessions are arranged to suit individuals and there is no charge for the service.
